RCL: Subjects
GENERAL LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE This section contains works pertinent to the study of languages and literature in general, and includes works of literary theory and criticism that are not specific to a single national literature; works on linguistics and language (including the English language and its history and development); and works treating special topics allied to the study of literature, such as book history and translation. Given the centrality of theoretical works to the study of literature at the graduate level and to literary scholarship, this section may contain more advanced works of criticism than can be found in the various literature sections. It also attempts to present a balanced retrospective collection of criticism. These works are essential to a historical understanding of criticism although they may be rarely cited in current scholarship. Where possible, works are recommended in their newest and/or most relevant edition. Some works are available only as reprints, while a few are out of print, though still recommended.
