MEDIEVAL STUDIES The scope of the Medieval Studies section was limited geographically to Europe and the Near East. The time period used was the traditional one of the fall of the Roman Empire to the beginning of the Renaissance or Early Modern period. Major fields explored included history, religion, archaeology, economics, politics, literature, and philosophy, among others. Books were selected with the lower division undergraduate in mind. More advanced works were selected for key topics where no work specific to undergraduates was available. While this section highlights interdisciplinary approaches, books written from a specific disciplinary perspective were included when appropriate. Effort was made to select recent publications, especially in covering topics that have grown in prominence in the last twenty years, but, as with many historical topics, older titles are often still classics in the field.
